Basic security
Who is basic security intended for?
Persons who have reached the statutory retirement age or who are permanently fully disabled and at least 18 years old are eligible.
Basic income support is aimed at those whose income and assets are not sufficient to cover their basic living needs.
Rule of thumbPlease note: As a simple rule of thumb, if your entire Income under 1,016 euros you should check whether you are entitled to basic income support. See: German Pension Insurance
Requirements for applying for basic income support
The following documents are required to apply for basic income support:
- Proof of needs that exceed your income and assets
- Evidence of your entitlement, e.g. proof of age or reduced earning capacity
- Proof of income and assets, including accommodation costs and other charges
There are allowances that are taken into account when calculating the basic income support. Basic income support is individually tailored to personal living conditions and includes standard needs, accommodation costs, additional needs and other benefits.

To receive basic income support, submit an application. Please note that the application is valid for twelve months from the date of application. Retroactive benefits are currently not possible. You should therefore remember to submit a follow-up application in good time.
